Tips for Candidates in Search of New Opportunities

The new year brings new challenges and new opportunities. The unemployment rate is down to 3.9% according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the number of unemployed people has declined by 3.7 million over the course of 2021. While a large percentage of the labor force is employed, many people are in search of new opportunities especially with the increase in remote work. FindStack reports 16% of companies worldwide are remote and 77% of remote workers say they are more productive. This along with the COVID-19 outbreak has made many employees realize remote work is the new norm and often the deciding factor for many employees when making the decision to stay in their current position or search for a new one. At PharmaOut, we specialize in the recruitment process for companies in the pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device and CRO space. If you are thinking about searching for a new opportunity, here are our tips to help you prepare.

Refresh Your Resume

At the start of every year it is important to update your resume with any promotions, awards, certifications and details about what you accomplished in your position(s). We suggest taking some time at the end of every month to update your resume to stay on top of things. Even if you don’t make changes every month, your resume will be up to date and you will feel more prepared if you do decide to search for a new position. It is important to include specifics about your job functions for recruiters and employers to see the impact you made at your organization. For example when applying for the position of a Clinical Trial Manager you can include: the drug/therapeutic area you worked on, scope of the trials you oversaw, the number of people you managed and the specific documents you helped prepare. This makes your resume stand out and increases the chance of a recruiter or employer contacting you.

Networking

Platforms like LinkedIn offer a feature called “Open to New Opportunities”. This shows recruiters with access to LinkedIn Recruiter that you are interested in a new role and will increase the chances of someone reaching out to you without notifying your employer of your interest in new opportunities. LinkedIn is also a great way to connect with other professionals. You can join networking groups specific to your industry/role such as the Pharma and Biotech Networking Group. By joining these online communities you will be notified of open positions and have the opportunity to connect with like minded professionals. If you are interested in learning about a person’s role, their career path or to connect directly with a hiring manager, you can reach out via inmail and this may help you gain a referral for a specific position or a mentor in your industry.  This is a great time to connect with your mentors to discuss your thoughts on where you want your career to go and advice on how to get there.  Networking with recruiters will also give you an advantage in the job market. Recruiters are familiar with industry trends, insight to specific companies/roles and are continuously looking to add candidates to their networks. At PharmaOut, we take the time to get to know our candidates so we can better understand your strengths and goals to help align you to the best role.

Be Open to Change

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we have had to change and adapt in order to survive. Many employers who previously offered no work from home opportunities now employ the majority of remote employees.  Individuals who preferred working in office realized they are more productive in their home environment and have a greater work life balance. Embracing the change COVID brought to the workplace has led to many advancements particularly within the pharmaceutical industry. At PharmaOut, many of our clients now offer completely remote roles which opens up our talent pool across the country and provides more opportunities for candidates. Whether you are looking to change job titles or want to be part of a startup with innovative trials, our seasoned recruiters can offer you advice and help you embrace change in your career.

The PharmaOut team remains committed to doing our part to fight COVID-19 and help keep our families safe. Our team of expert recruiters and consultants have years of experience to assist our clients in successfully continuing their business with our staffing, consulting, HR and investigator meeting services.
